The Origin of the Red Bush tea:

Rooibos (Aspalathus linearis) is a naturally occurring herb found only in the Cedarberg Mountains of South African. It is therefore, technically not a true tea, as traditional tea comes from the Cameilla plants. The name Rooibos comes from the African slang for the Dutch words for 'red bush'. In summer the Aspalathus linearis changes from green to a rich red under the influence of the natural mineral waters, fresh mountain air and the hot African sun, at this stage it is ready to harvest. Rooibos is rich the essential elements that surround it, the result is a natural healing elixir from natures own life source.

The Red bush plant is a small, rather delicate shrub that grows anywhere from 1/2 to 1 meters and has thin, needle-like leaves. The leaves are green, but turn the characteristic red after fermentation. The Rooibos plants produce only few seeds, which pop out of the fruits as soon as they are ripe, making harvest difficult. The plants thrive best when left along in their natural soil. The farming of Rooibos has always been very close to nature and remains so today.

For centuries the red bush tea plant was widely used and trusted by the people of the indigenous Khoisan tribe, as an herbal remedy for a wide range of ailments. But as the tribe dispersed and eventually faded out, so did the knowledge and use of the red bush. It was however rediscovered by a Russian immigrant named Benjamin Ginsberg in the 18th century and he became the first to market Rooibos tea. Since then its sweet, slightly nutty flavor and refreshing taste has been enjoyed by South Africans for generations and generations. We are only now beginning to become aware of the startling powers that this wonder of nature possesses and the wide spectrum of applications and benefits, which the entire world can now come to discover. Although internationally Rooibos is still considered a fairly new tea more and more people are coming to love this unique red taste.
